Foca (Phokaia)

Foca is one of the rare towns of the Aegean Region that maintained its antique architecture. It is known as two parts: The Old Foca ( Eski Foca ) and the New Foca ( Yeni Foca ) . The people of Phoikaia who sailed from harbour to harbour with their fast ships resistant against the strong storms and waves of the open seas transferred different cultures to different regions. On one side, they took alphabet to France, on the other; they grew olive in most of the coasts of Mediterranean region...

Foca is an Ionian town that maintained its antique and Ottoman ruins and architecture up to the present day together with its shopping centres along the seashore, and restaurants and cafeterias that you will enjoy very much. You will be able to make shopping from the shops and handcrafts stores in the centre of the town, and have delicious Turkish food such as flour products baked in stone-ovens, sea products and classical Turkish meals. You will easily reach communication tools in the town at the best service.

You may organize tours in order to discover hundreds of beautiful bays of Foca coastline and embrace the nature in the temperate climate of Izmir.

Foca (Phokaia) which was founded by the seamen of Phokaia in 600 B.C. is one of the most important settlements of the Ionians. Foca presented significant works of art in Philosophy, Architecture and Sculpture, and got the name "Foca" from the "Fok" - meaning Seal in Turkish - seen in Foca coastline.

Phokaia, as the first of the Ionian towns printed the electron coins made of natural gold-silver mixture, was led by Seleukos Kings of Bergama and finally by the Romans.

It was the centre of Bishops in the early times of Christianity. Foca has historical beauties with various and interesting legends. Siren Rocks, Kybele Open-air Temple, Beşkapilar are som of the fascinating places.
